STEM in Hawai‘i

Pacific American Foundation's Waikalua Loko I‘a Fish Pond

For two decades, an intensive effort by students, community groups, public and private partners, and individual members of the greater community, breathed new life back into the 400 year old fishpond. As each stone was put back on the wall and each native plant took root, a foundation was laid for a healthier and sustainable future, honoring the rich cultural and natural heritage of the Kāne‘ohe ahupua’a. And now these mo‘olelo, science and history lessons can be found online

STEMworks

STEMworks Hawai‘i

For nearly two decades, STEMworks™ – a program of Maui Economic Development Board, Inc.’s (MEDB) Women in Technology project – has led the state in progressive Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education. The mission of STEMworks™ is to provide students and teachers resources, inspiration, and tools that empower them to improve their community and the world. MEDB hosts an annual Hawai‘i STEM Conference. Held on Oahu, STEMworks™ students and teachers, along with community and business leaders across the state are invited to celebrate STEM service-learning projects, hear stories of inspiration, engage in activities with some of the biggest names in STEM, and experience the excitement of a regional technology conference.

Purple Mai‘a

Purple Mai‘a teaches coding and computer science through afterschool and elective classes to Native Hawaiian students, low-income youth, and others who are underrepresented in tech. As they increase access to tech education, Purple Mai‘a also grounds students in the knowledge that their ancestors were indigenous innovators who used their skills and perspective to serve their communities and lands. Supporting Hawaiian values in contemporary tech culture, Purple Mai‘a thinks that by learning to innovate as indigenous technologists, youth can be part of a global shift toward growing more sustainable and just societies.
