Core Area ONe:
Pilina

Core Area One: Pilinia | Relationships
Why do pilina (relationships) matter in out-of-school time programming?

When pilina flourish, they reveal what youth need, desire, aspire to, and dream of. Establishing trusted pilina between youth and adult staff fosters strong bonds, mutual respect, and knowledge-sharing opportunities.
  • Trusted pilina make programs more responsive to the needs of youth, their families, and the communities they serve.
  • Pilina form the basis of a genuine aloha spirit.
  • Intertwined with aloha, pilina embody Hawaiʻi and serve as the cornerstone for the quality guidelines.
  • ʻIke aku, ʻike mai; ʻIke aku, ʻike mai, kōkua aku, kōkua mai. Recognize and be recognized, help and be helped. — Pilina are the foundation for thriving, healthy, and successful communities to which youth belong.
  • Pilina building facilitates learning, supports whole youth development, and guides program administration.
  • Pilina are central to OST programming in Hawaiʻi.
